Grey Squirrel Craft, Flint and Foraging

In Celtic mythology, squirrels are the bringers of rain, water and snow

As beautiful as that imagery is, let’s hope they don’t bring it over the 29th and 30th of August!

Saturday:

Work with grey squirrel hides that have been hunted with a deep reverence and respect. We shall give a new lease of life to our animal kin!

Knapp tools, forage and live with the land!

We will learn how to butcher ethically hunted squirrels. and work with their hides. We will learn about the grey squirrels and how to see their signs in nature. We shall also experience the wonders of flint scraper tools being effective on thick squirrel hides. Through out the day we will knapp scrapers and flakes to be used there and then.

We will cover:

  • flint knapping flakes and scrapers

  • squirrel tracks and signs and tuning into them

  • animal butchery and slow cooked early dinner

  • foraging

Sunday:

Sunday we will sew up our squirrel pouches which can be used as container for our new flint tools. We shall also return to knapping and use antler to produce thin flint flakes. We shall whittle handles and hart them with Stone Age glue.

We will cover:

  • Rawhide pouch making

  • flint knapping thin flakes

  • harfting flint tools

  • Stone Age glue
