The Way of the Red Squirrel

  • Red Squirrels are native to Britain and have belonged to this land since at least the end of the last Ice Age, some 12,000 years ago. It was a time not only of Red Squirrels roaming the land, but also of wild humans living as hunter-gatherers. Humans and Red Squirrels coexisted in the wild, living in a way that was truly sustainable.

    Today, both the wildness and the Red Squirrels have been pushed to the fringes, and in many areas, they no longer inhabit the ecosystem. But there is hope—Red Squirrels can make a comeback, the wildness can return, and we humans can remember how to engage with the living world. Like the Red Squirrels, we too can thrive in the wild. All it takes is for our bodies and hands to remember what they’ve always known: how to participate in nature in a reciprocal way.

    The Red Squirrel is a symbol of rewilding, and there is much we can learn from it. This is The Way of the Red Squirrel.
